Marimaba Museum

Bienvenidos al Museo Virtual de la Marimba Mexicana. En este proyecto, iniciado al invierno de 1997, esperamos poder ofrecerles video, audio y texto en la nueva tecnologia on-line para los fines de 1998.

En toda cultura existen instrumentos de tipo xilofono. El instrumento que se usa en Chiapas es muy especial para m i por muchas razones. La marimbachiapaneca se toca generalmente en grupo, particularmente por miembros de una misma familia. La marimba actual tiene antecedentes africanos y un repertorio europeo-occidental (en terminos armonicos y melodicos). Esta combinacion refleja un ejemplo perfecto de mestizaje-una entidad que es sin duda alguna,muy mexicana.

Finalmente, me sorprende el hecho de que la marimba sea un factor unificador en una tierra que esta dividida tanto geografica y politicamen te, as como por sus idiomas, su economia y sus clases sociales. En dado momento, se puede escuchar un instrumento rustico de un solo teclado en las selvas ardientes inspirando a las tropas Zapatistas. Al mismo tiempo, en una funcion gubernamental en el estado de la capital, se escucha uno de los cuatro grupos marimbisticos de tiempo completo y subsidados por el mismo gobierno, dentro de un cuarto con aire acondicionado.

La marimba parece ser algo que cualquier persona puede d isfrutar ya que esta entretejida en la vida diaria del estado sureste de Mexico.

Welcome to the Virtual Museum of the Mexican Marimba. This project was initiated in the Winter of 1997, and it is hoped that much of it will be up and going by the end of 1998. Through video, audio, and text, we hope to have as much information on-line as technology will allow.

It seems that xylophone-type instruments exist in every culture. The one in Chiapas is special to me for many reasons. The Chiapan marimba is always heard in groups, and many of these groups are family-based. The present day instrument has its physical antecedents from Africa, yet a repertoire that is solidly Western-European (in terms of melodic and harmonic function). All combined it seems to be the perfect example of mestizaje-- an entity which is undeniably Mexican.

Most of all, I am struck by the fact that the marimba is a uniting factor in a land which is divided by geography, language, politics, economics, and social class. At any moment a rough hewn single-keyboard instrument in the steaming jungles can be heard inspiring troops in the Zapatista Army. Simultaneously, any high government function in the state capital can be serenaded by one of four (!) full-time government subsidized ensembles- in air conditioned comfort.

The marimba seems to be something everyone can enjoy, as it is woven into the fabric of everyday life in Mexico`s southernmost state.
