New Models of Leadership in Higher Education

Laurence D. Kaptain
Vice-Provost for Faculty Programs and Academic Quality
University of Missouri-Kansas City

On Friday January 24, 2003 from 8:45-10:15 AM Dr. Kaptain made an interactive presentation at the AAC&U National Conference in Seattle: “New Models of Leadership in Higher Education.”

Traditional leadership models and formulae will not sustain higher education in these changing times. With the current economic, societal, and technological changes facing higher education, more is being expected and required--yet fiscal resources are becoming more difficult to acquire. If intellectual capital and creative assets are to be mobilized, it seems that traditional leadership models will not be sufficient to sustain—let alone advance student learning outcomes at colleges and universities.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City is engaged in a dynamic process of institutional transformation.

The process part at UMKC is twofold:

  • designed to access the creativity, ideas, and energy of the people.
  • and to produce quantum behaviors and quantum results.

Thus, the collective wisdom of individuals, is unleashed to change the network of conversation throughout the organization in order to:

  • produce early results as breakthrough projects
  • develop a shared vision for the future
  • develop a set of shared core values and make decisions from them
  • develop leaders throughout the institution
  • use adversity to create opportunity
